Chapter Fifty One

Grissom followed his wife to the door, Ant cradled securely in his arms as he fed the baby a bottle. He knelt down and winked at his oldest son.

“Be a good boy today, Weevil.”

Mikey giggled and ran out the door onto the porch. Grissom stood and leaned into Sara and placed a tender kiss on her lips. He stifled a groan as her tongue slipped out and slid along his bottom lip.

She grinned as she pulled back from him. “Mm…apple.”

“Mommy!”

“I’m coming, Mikey.” She winked at her husband as she gently ran her fingers through Ant’s dark hair. “I’ll be home soon…”

Grissom nodded silently as he watched Sara and Mikey make their way to the black Tahoe sitting in the driveway. He sighed lightly as he heard Alex begin to whimper.

Looking down at the young boy in his arms, he smiled as he closed the front door. “I think your brother is awake.”

An innocent smile appeared on Ant’s face.

As Grissom began to walk through the living room towards the hall, the phone rang. He quickly grabbed it with his free hand as he passed the table.

“Hello?”

“Hi Grissom…it’s Jessie.”

He cradled the cordless phone between his ear and shoulder as he entered the nursery. “Hey…you just left not that long ago. Did you forget something?”

Hearing the gentle cry of one of the buglets, she smiled. “Actually, I did. I’m taking my nephew to the library this afternoon. They have story tellers come in once in a while. Anyway, today they’re having a guy come in who writes children’s books dealing with insects. I thought Mikey might enjoy it, and forgot to ask you about it before I left. Would it be okay if I came by and picked him up?”

Grissom chuckled softly as he fumbled with the snaps on Alex’s pajamas. “He probably would love it. What time is he going to be there?”

“Three-thirty…”

Realizing that he needed both hands, he quickly placed Ant in his crib. He smiled at the baby as he cooed contentedly. He easily undressed Alex and reached for a clean diaper. “Well, he’s at daycare today. If you want to go by and get him this afternoon, I’ll call Sara and have her tell Ellie that you’ll be picking him up.”

“Are you sure that’s okay?”

Grissom chuckled into the phone. “Well, we trust you to spend the night here and watch after all three of the boys…I’m sure we can trust you to pick Weevil up and take him to the library.”

Jessie laughed at his comment as she nodded. “Good point. Okay, I’ll have him home around 5 or so.”

“Sounds good to me. I’ll let Sara know.”

Jessie grinned as she heard him talking softly to Alex. “Are both of them awake?”

“Oh yeah…”

“Well, then…I’ll let you go.”

“Okay, have a nice day, Jessie. And…thank you.”

“No problem, Grissom. I’ll talk to you later.”

As he ended the connection on his end, he smiled down at Alex. Signing as he spoke to the boy, he grinned as Alex’s blue eyes sparkled. “Good morning, little man. You slept longer than your brother today.”

Alex giggled softly, causing Ant to giggle in return. After redressing Alex, Grissom spread a soft cotton blanket on the nursery floor and placed both of the buglets on it to play.

“And, before I forget…I need to call your mother.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Sara glanced at her cell phone sitting in the cradle attached to the dashboard of her Tahoe, smiling as she read the caller id. Reaching over, she hit the button for the speakerphone.

“I haven’t been gone that long, Gil…”

“Daddy on da phone?”

“Hey buddy. What are you doing?”

Weevil giggled. “Daddy!”

Sara laughed lightly. “What do you need me to pick up on the way home?”

Grissom’s brow furrowed slightly. “What?”

“I just figured that if you’re calling this soon, it’s because we need something…”

“Bubbles!” Mikey called out from the back seat.

“Besides bubbles, that is…”

Grissom chuckled. “Actually, Jessie just called…”

“Oh?”

“Yeah…can you put the earpiece in?”

Sara arched an eyebrow and glanced into the rearview mirror to look at Mikey. “Uh…yeah, okay. Hold on…”

After connecting the earpiece into the phone, she spoke quietly to her husband. “Is everything okay?”

“Oh, yeah…everything’s fine. She just wanted to know if it was okay for her to take Weevil to the library this afternoon with her nephew.”

“Oh, that sounds like fun. What time is she going to come by to pick him up?”

“Actually, she’s going to pick him up this afternoon from daycare. I was wondering if you’d mind letting Ellie know when you drop him off…”

“Sure. You know, we should go ahead and have her put on the list of people approved to pick him up…”

“I was thinking the same thing. Do you care to do that while you’re there?”

Sara chuckled softly. “Oh, I don’t know Gil…that’s a pretty hard thing to do. You know…give a name and such…”

“Smart ass…” Grissom smiled as he watched his two younger sons playing quietly on the blanket.

As Alex giggled, Sara grinned. “Are both of them awake?”

“Yeah, they’re playing on the blanket right now. I’m getting ready to feed Alex…”

“Then, I’d better let you go, huh?”

Grissom chuckled as he nodded. “Put me back on speakerphone for a minute.”

“Okay…” Sara reached over to disconnect the earpiece, stopping when she heard her husband say ‘wait’. “What?”

“I love you…and I’m really hoping we can get the buglets back to sleep pretty quickly after you get home…”

She laughed at the suggestive tone in his voice. “Me too…and, I love you. I’m putting you on speaker now…”

Grissom bit back his comment as Sara released the earpiece from the phone. He grinned as he heard Sara tell Weevil to say goodbye to Daddy.

“Bye-bye Daddy! Git bubbles!”

Grissom laughed softly before he spoke. “I promise…we’ll have bubbles for your next bath, okay son?”

“Yep!”

“Be a good boy, and have fun today…”

“O-tay! Oo be good! Hab fun!”

Grissom’s laughter grew. “I love you, Weevil Mike.”

Wub oo, Daddy Geel! Bye!”

Grissom laughed as Sara disconnected the call. Looking down at the two boys playing happily on the floor, he shook his head slowly. “Your brother is definitely…different.”

Crouching down, he quickly picked up both boys and stood back up. “Come on, let’s go in the living room…you two can play in there while I get Alex’s breakfast ready. And then…you can both go to sleep when Mommy comes home…so that we can go to bed. To sleep, of course…because we’re both pretty tired. And…”

He shook his head in amusement as he walked into the living room. “Why am I telling you two this? It’s not like I need to justify to you two why Mommy and I are going to bed…do I? Now, if I were telling this to Mikey, he’d have a million questions. But neither of you are talking…yet. So…I’m pretty much talking to myself. How about I tell you about the case that Catherine and I are working on? It’s really pretty interesting…”

Chapter Fifty Two

Sara walked through the front door and opened her mouth to announce her arrival to her husband. Hearing him talking in the kitchen, she closed her mouth and placed the plastic bag, holding two bottles of bubble bath, on the floor. She walked quietly to the entranceway to the kitchen and leaned against the doorframe, tilting her head in amusement as she listened to Grissom chatting to the buglets.

“But, the thing of it is…there weren’t any fingerprints on any of the fingers we recovered. They weren’t cut off, they were burned off. We’re not sure what kind of chemical was used yet…hopefully, Greg will be able to tell us something tonight. But, it makes it easier for us. Chemical burns are a little simpler to trace than the type of instrument it would take to cut off prints cleanly.”

Noticing that the boys’ eyes had drifted from him to the doorway, he dropped his hands and turned around to find his wife standing there with a smile on her face.

“Hi…didn’t hear you come in.”

Sara pushed off of the doorframe and walked into the kitchen, laughing lightly. “I figured as much. Gil…don’t you think they’re just a little young to be hearing about…severed fingers and missing fingerprints?”

Grissom’s face reddened as he shrugged his shoulders. “Probably, but…it’s not like they can really understand what I’m talking about. And…” Seeing her smile widen, he sighed. “Yeah, they’re too young. But, once I started thinking about it, I started talking about it…and…you know how that goes.”

“Uh-huh.” She chuckled as she bent down and kissed the top of his head.

“So…did you clear Jessie to pick up Weevil this afternoon?”

“Yep. Not a problem at all.” She walked around the table and leaned down to kiss the boys, who were giggling happily as they wiggled in their bouncers that Grissom had placed on top of the kitchen table. “Was Daddy telling you scary stories?”

Sara laughed as Ant reached his small arms out towards her. She quickly unfastened him and picked him up. “Daddy likes scary stories, doesn’t he?”

Grissom stood up and lifted Alex out of his bouncer, shaking his head in amusement. “So does Mommy, doesn’t she?”

He followed Sara into the living room, where they sat down on the couch. Glancing over towards the door, his brow furrowed. “What’s in the bag?”

“Bubbles!” She laughed as she looked into her husband’s eyes. “He made me promise him that I’d stop on the way home to get them.”

She lifted her hand to cover her mouth as she yawned. Ant wiggled around on her lap. “They’re not at all tired, are they?”

Grissom tickled Alex’s ribs, smiling as the boy giggled. “No…they’re not.”

Sara lifted Ant into the air and grinned at him. “Why won’t you go back to sleep?”

Ant responded with a hearty laugh.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

An hour into what the buglets considered morning playtime, the doorbell rang. Grissom yawned as he stood up and walked around the cotton blanket that the boys were playing on. Opening the door, he found a smiling Catherine standing on the front porch.

“You’re still up.”

“Nice observation, Catherine.” He took a step back to allow the woman to enter the home.

Glancing down at Alex and Ant playing on the floor, she grinned. “And, they’re still up.”

“Hence the reason Sara and I aren’t in bed…” He closed the door and ran his hand through his hair. “Something break on the case?”

“Huh?” She turned around to look at him. “Oh, no…”

“Then…why are you here?”

Sara put down her magazine as she laughed. “Just get to the point, Gil…”

Catherine chuckled as she sat down on the chair and watched Grissom return to his seat next to Sara. “Actually…I was wondering if it would be okay to take Alex and Ant. I mean, I know that both of you are tired…and this is my day off, so I can sleep tonight.”

Grissom narrowed his eyes slightly. “You’ve never offered to take them on any of your other days off…”

Sara smacked his arm. “Don’t be rude.”

“I’m not…it’s an observation. And my investigator instincts tell me that there’s another reason, that’s all.”

Catherine laughed as she nodded her head. “Well, you’re right.”

Grissom winked at Sara as he grinned. “See?”

“Actually, it’s more to do with helping Linds.”

Grissom’s eyes widened. “Is she going to do a science project on twins?”

Sara and Catherine laughed at his sudden enthusiasm.

Hearing the laughter, his expression changed. “What’s so funny?”

Sara laid a hand on his thigh. “Only you would jump immediately to the conclusion of a science project…”

“Well, if I had known someone with twins…I would’ve done a project on it.”

Catherine caught her breath as she shook her head. “Luckily, Lindsay isn’t like you.”

“Well…I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or not, but…go on.”

“You know Linds loves the boys. All three of them. So, of course, now she’s pestering me for a little brother for her. Specifically…twins. I thought maybe if we could spend the day with them…she’d understand that caring for twins isn’t exactly…easy.”

“So…it is kind of like an experiment…”

Sara laughed lightly. “I remember my aunt taking me to spend the day with them one time. I was probably about 5 or 6, extremely inquisitive. By the time I went home, my cousin was sure that he was happy being an only child.”

Catherine returned Sara’s laughter. “I’m hoping it’ll work for me too.”

As Sara stood up to go pack a bag for the boys, Grissom slid onto the floor next to the blanket. “You get to be part of an experiment!”

Alex and Ant giggled at their father.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

By the time Catherine had left with the buglets, Sara was barely able to keep her eyes open. She stood under the hot spray of water and yawned as she rinsed her hair. She sighed gently, hoping that Grissom wouldn’t be too disappointed that she needed a couple of hours sleep.

Turning off the water, she stepped out of the shower and grabbed her bath towel. After quickly towel-drying her hair, she slid into her fluffy bath robe and walked to the bedroom.

She grinned as her eyes drifted towards the bed. Her husband was sound asleep. He was still wearing his glasses, the book he had been reading was resting on his bare chest.

She walked over to him and carefully removed his glasses, placing them on the bedside table. She glanced at the book and chuckled softly when she saw that it was an old Entomology text.

She took off her robe and hung it on the back of the bedroom door before sliding her warm body under the blankets and snuggling up next to him. He mumbled something in his sleep and rolled onto his side as he wrapped his arms around her.

It didn’t take her long to join him in sleep.

Chapter Fifty Three

Sara opened her eyes and smiled as she felt her husband’s arm wrapped securely around her abdomen. She yawned sleepily as she glanced at the clock on the bedside table. She shook her head lightly, realizing she had only been asleep for a couple of hours. Shifting her gaze towards the baby monitor, she wondered why it was so quiet.

And then she remembered. She grinned at the thought of her two youngest sons being part of an ‘experiment’.

Feeling Grissom’s warm breath on the back of her neck, she realized that he was still asleep. Her grin widened as she gently lifted his arm and turned over to face him.

He stirred lightly and rolled onto his back, still in a sound sleep. She was content for the moment to just lay there and watch him sleep. As he breathed deeply and slowly, she placed her fingertips on his bare chest.

She smiled as she allowed her hand to glide down his torso, gently pushing the sheet and blanket down his body. Propping herself up on her left elbow, she bent her head and lightly kissed his chest.

He murmured softly in his sleep as she placed kisses down the path her hand had just made. She glanced up at him as her index finger slid along his semi-hard length.

His head rolled to the side as he took in a deep breath. Convinced her movements hadn’t woken him, she smiled as she moved further down the bed. Her eyes remained locked on his sleeping face as she placed a tender kiss on the glans.

She felt his body shift slightly, but his eyes remained closed. She wrapped her long fingers around the base of his hardening shaft and pulled the head into her mouth.

He groaned softly as her tongue laved the velvety flesh. As her mouth began to slide down the shaft, her fingers released the base and moved to gently massage his scrotum. She felt him begin to harden more as she slid back towards the glans.

She continued to gaze up at him as she gently flicked the head with the tip of her tongue. Her smile shone in her eyes as she watched his eyelids slowly flutter open. As their eyes met, she quickly engulfed him.

Suddenly wide awake, he groaned loudly as the head of his erection slid down into her throat. His hand trembled slightly as he reached out and threaded his fingers through her hair.

She pulled her head back, allowing him to slip out of her mouth. She held the shaft with her warm fingers and, starting at the base, dragged her tongue along the underside of his erection. As she reached the head, she kissed it softly and smiled up at him.

“Did I wake you?”

He licked his lips as he nodded. “Come here…”

“I’m…a bit busy at the moment…” Her fingers gently massaged his erection.

His hands gripped her upper arms and pulled her up his body. She grumbled softly as she released his hardened flesh from her grasp. Sliding one arm around her lower back, he held her against him as his other hand wrapped around the back of her neck and pulled her down to his mouth.

Her moan was muffled as he plunged his tongue into her warm mouth. Feeling her shift her weight, he easily rolled her onto her back and covered her body with his. She whispered his name as his lips moved to her neck and gently nibbled at the sensitive skin there.

Pushing himself up, he knelt between her legs and smiled. He watched her for a moment. Watched her breasts rise and fall with each heavy breath she took. Watched her tongue sneak out and lick her reddened lips. Watched her glazed eyes taking in the sight of his naked flesh.

His hands slid along her thighs as he licked his lips. “I love you, Sara.”

She smiled lovingly at him, closing her eyes as he lifted her right leg and laid down perpendicular to her body. As he lowered her leg across his torso, he placed a tender kiss on her inner thigh. His fingers played across her outer thigh as he licked a path towards his destination.

He heard her let out an animalistic growl as his tongue slid between her lips. Shifting his body slightly, he moved his right hand and used his thumb and index finger to part her lips. He inhaled her scent deeply for a moment. With a deep groan, he quickly covered her clitoris with his mouth and sucked the hardened nub with a sense of urgency she hadn’t felt in a while.

She tightened her leg around him, the heel of her foot digging into the middle of his back. She groaned loudly as he carefully nibbled on her clit. She gasped as his middle finger quickly slid into her wet depths. She whimpered as he, just as quickly, removed the digit and replaced it with his thumb.

Rotating her hips, she ground against him as he continued to torture her clit with his lips and tongue. Arching her back, she cried out as his middle finger gently pushed its way into her anus. He stopped for a second, looking up at her to make sure she was alright.

Reaching down with her left hand, she grabbed the back of his head and panted heavily. “Don’t…stop…”

He smiled as he broke the gaze and resumed his attack on her body. As he alternated the gentle strokes into her orifices with his finger and thumb, his mouth released her clit. She groaned in frustration as his tongue slowly circled her engorged nub.

Feeling her walls tighten around his thumb, he halted all motion. Her nails scraped against his scalp as she screamed his name, begging him not to stop. Licking his lips, he allowed his digits to slip from her. With one last lick against her clit, he pushed himself up and knelt between her shaking thighs.

“Gil…”

“Shh…” He smiled as he bent his head and kissed her deeply.

She felt his erection throb against her thigh as his tongue found hers. He slid off of her body as he broke the kiss. She looked at him, the confusion evident in her darkened eyes.

“Gil?”

“Roll over.” His glazed eyes sparkled as he spoke softly. “Onto your stomach…”

She bit her lower lip in anticipation as she did as he had asked. His teeth nipped at her shoulder as he moved in between her spread legs. Sliding his right arm under her abdomen, he carefully lifted her enough for her to rest on her knees in front of him.

Taking his erection into his hand, he guided himself into her depths. They groaned in unison as he slid his length into her. After a few gentle thrusts, he pulled out and placed a kiss on her spine.

She leaned forward a bit more as she felt his well-lubricated flesh slide along the crevice in her ass. “Sara?”

“Yes…please…”

His heart raced as he gently spread her cheeks and pressed the glans against the puckered orifice. She bit her lip, holding her breath, as he carefully eased the head into her. He closed his eyes, gripping her hip with his left hand, as he waited for her inner muscles to relax enough for him to continue.

After a few seconds, he felt her move against him…slowly drawing his thick length into her. He watched tiny beads of sweat appear on her back. When he was fully encased in her depths, he reached underneath her and gently pressed against her clit.

She groaned and bucked her hips. As he began to thrust gently into her, she covered his hand with one of hers, urging him to rub her clitoris. He followed her lead, rubbing gently as he matched his strokes to her bucking hips.

He moaned her name as he felt her body shudder beneath him. Her hand dropped to the sheet covering the mattress as he brought her closer to the edge.

Her fingers clutched the sheet as she screamed his name while her climax crashed over her. His hand grasped her hip, his fingers digging into her skin, as he readied himself for his impending orgasm.

Her name left his lips on a throaty grunt as he slammed himself into her one last time. She screamed again as she felt his hot semen flood her walls. As he emptied himself into her, her knees finally gave way and she collapsed onto her stomach. He fell onto her back, quickly rolling off of her to keep from hurting her.

She gasped as she felt his softening cock slip out of her. His trembling hand slid across her sweaty back as he pulled her against him.

“Are…you…okay?” He fought to catch his breath as his fingertips caressed her skin.

She slowly turned towards him, a smile appearing on her face. “More than…”

He matched her smile with one of his own and leaned into her, brushing his lips against hers. “That was a wonderful way to wake up, but…I’m tired. Either I didn’t get enough sleep, or you completely wore me out, or…both.”

Her face reddened slightly as she grinned at him. “Well…we did only sleep for a couple of hours…”

He chuckled softly as he brushed her damp hair away from her face. “And…you did completely wear me out, I think.”

“So…both?”

He kissed her lips gently. “Mm-hm…”

“Good.” She smiled as he lost the battle with a yawn. “Do you want to take a shower?”

“I want…to hold you in my arms and go back to sleep for a while. You game?”

She draped her arm across him and placed a kiss on his chin. “I am…”

She watched him for a moment after he had closed his eyes. As his breathing began to even out, she allowed her eyes to close as well.

“Thank you for waking me up.” He said sleepily.

She smiled and snuggled closer to him. “You’re welcome. Now…sleep, babe.”

Chapter Fifty Four

Grissom opened his eyes as he felt her warm body slide from his arms. “Where are you going?”

She turned her head towards him and smiled. “I’m just going to put some clothes on…”

“Why?” He reached out and caressed her bare back with his fingertips.

“Because…it’s twenty ‘til two, and I’m still tired.”

He narrowed his eyes in confusion, causing her to chuckle lightly. “Weevil will be home in a couple of hours…and, I really don’t think I’d be comfortable with him jumping into bed with us while we’re…”

Grissom grinned as the realization hit him. “Naked…yeah…”

He followed her out of bed and slipped on a pair of clean boxer shorts and a t-shirt as he watched her do the same. With a warm smile, she crawled back into bed and patted the mattress as he stood silently, watching her.

You coming back to bed?”

He gave her a brief nod before sliding under the covers with her. “You’re still tired?”

She yawned as she snuggled up against him. “Aren’t you?”

“Mm-hm…”

Placing a soft kiss on his lips, she draped her arm over his body. “Then, let’s sleep a bit more…”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Jessie unlocked the front door and carefully pushed it open. Poking her head inside and hearing nothing, she realized that Grissom and Sara were still asleep. She smiled down at the young boy standing at her feet as she lifted her index finger to her lips.

“We have to be quiet, Mikey. I think your Mommy and Daddy are still asleep.”

“O-tay…”

She chuckled to herself as she watched the boy tiptoe into the living room. Placing his bag on the floor beside of the sofa, she reached down and lightly ruffled his curls.

“Are you hungry?”

“Yep. I hungy.”

“Okay...”

He followed her into the kitchen, and looked up at her. “Can I have taytas?”

She opened the refrigerator door, smiling when she saw a container on the top shelf with “Weevil” written on the lid. As she opened the bowl full of mashed potatoes, she nodded.

“Yeah, I think you can have potatoes.”

“Yay!” He jumped up and down in excitement as she placed the container on the counter and pulled a spoon out of the drawer. “Git my bow!”

She laughed softly as she opened the cabinet and retrieved the blue plastic bowl with pictures of different insects covering the outside. “This one?”

He nodded happily and watched her fill up his bowl with the refrigerated potatoes. As she walked over to the microwave, she smiled at him.

“Why don’t you go make sure that your brothers are okay while your potatoes are heating up?”

A bright grin appeared on the boy’s face as he turned and ran towards the hall.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

A shrill scream jolted Grissom and Sara out of their sleep. As they jumped out of bed, Sara called Weevil’s name. Grissom flung the bedroom door open and ran into the hall as Jessie sprinted towards the nursery from the kitchen.

Sara ran into the nursery to find her oldest son standing in the middle of the floor, tears streaming down his face. “Mikey, what’s wrong?”

He looked at her through his watery hazel eyes and pointed towards the empty cribs. His voice hitched through his sobs. “Day…gone. But…I good…boy.”

His parents knelt on either side of him, his father’s strong hand on his back between his shoulder blades. “Weevil, they’re okay.”

“Not…here. Day gone…wike me.”

Grissom and Sara exchanged a concerned glance as Sara quickly picked him up. Jessie stepped out of the nursery, following them into the living room. As they sat down, Mikey began to talk softly.

“I wuz bad. Unca Gweb tode me ta be good. Den bad wadie taked me.”

Jessie stood up quickly and walked to the phone. Sara wiped the back of her hand across her eyes. Grissom’s fingers stroked the back of his son’s head.

“I sed I be good so bad wadie won’ take Awec an’ And.”

“Weevil…” Grissom inhaled deeply as the boy looked up at him. “The bad lady didn’t take Alex and Ant. They’re okay, I promise. They’re with Catherine and Lindsey today.”

Wif Cad?”

Grissom nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving Mikey’s. “No bad lady, Weevil. Would you like to call her?”

Mikey sniffled as he nodded and snuggled against Sara’s chest. Grissom glanced at Jessie, who was still on the phone, and sighed softly. “I’ll be right back, I just need to go get my phone from the bedroom, okay?”

Otay.”

Grissom’s heart sank as he heard the tone of his son’s voice. As he walked from the room, Jessie ended her call and handed the phone to Sara.

“I’m sorry…I wanted to let Greg know…he still has nightmares about that night. He’s on his way over to help…”

“Thank you, Jessie.” She looked towards the hall as she punched Catherine’s number into the keypad. “Gil? I’m calling her now…”

Grissom stopped outside of the bedroom door and leaned against the doorframe. He took a deep breath as the nausea began to wash over him. Realizing what was happening, he dashed towards the bathroom, barely making it to the toilet in time as his stomach emptied its contents into the porcelain bowl.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Sara gently rocked Mikey as she waited for Catherine to answer the phone. She breathed a heavy sigh of relief when she heard the woman’s familiar voice.

“Catherine…hi. Uh…Weevil wants to talk to you, okay?” She listened for a moment and then handed the phone to her son.

Mikey held the phone with both hands and sniffled. “Is my bubbas otay?”

Another tear rolled down Sara’s cheek as she listened to him talk to Catherine.

“Day wif oo an’ Winsie?”

Sara looked up as Grissom slowly walked back into the room.

“Bad wadie don’ haf ‘em?”

Sara’s eyes widened in concern as she noticed how pale her husband was. He shook his head slowly in an effort to let her know he was okay as he sat down beside of her.

“Wen day comin’ home?”

She raised a trembling hand and placed her palm on Grissom’s cheek. Hearing a noise, he turned his head towards the kitchen. “Jessie?”

Otay. See oo soo.”

He handed the phone back to his mother and spoke in a soft voice. “Cad wan’s ta tawk.” Then he carefully crawled into his father’s lap.

Jessie emerged from the kitchen with three cups of hot coffee and a small cup of lukewarm chocolate. She waited until Weevil had settled himself against Grissom’s chest and then handed him the small cup.

“Look what I have for you, Weevil…”

He sniffed the cup, then smiled at her. “Hop choklat!”

She returned his smile and then offered Grissom a cup of coffee. He took a small sip before placing the cup on the table beside of the couch.

“Grissom? Are you okay?”

“Yeah…”

Jessie nodded slowly as Sara ended the phone call. She glanced at both parents and then at Weevil. “Greg’s on his way over…”

Weevil looked up, his eyes still glassy. “Unca Gweb?”

Jessie smiled at the boy, causing him to giggle softly. Looking up at his father, he smiled brightly. “Unca Gweb is comin’!”

Grissom kissed his son’s head as he took the cup from his hands.

Chapter Fifty Five

Greg pulled into the Grissom’s driveway and killed the engine. Taking a deep breath, he opened the car door and stepped out. As he walked up the pathway, he saw Jessie standing on the front porch. He stepped onto the porch and leaned over, placing a soft kiss on her cheek.

“How is he?” He asked softly.

Jessie sighed heavily and shook her head slowly. “He’s calmed down a bit since he talked to Catherine and made sure that Alex and Ant are okay…”

“That’s good…is she bringing them home soon?”

Jessie nodded as she placed her hand on Greg’s arm. “She’s on her way now, but…I’m more worried about Grissom.”

Greg tilted his head slightly and looked into her eyes. “Grissom?”

“Greg, he got really upset. I’ve never seen him like that before. It’s like he was…”

He cut her off quickly, finishing her statement. “Reliving the episode?” Her silence told him that he was correct. “I know…the same thing happens to me…”

Placing his hand on the doorknob, he offered her a nervous smile. “Come on…let’s go see how they’re doing.”

Jessie followed Greg into the house, stopping beside of him as he halted his motion in the living room entrance. She followed his gaze, finding the young boy curled up on his mother’s lap. Grissom’s left arm was wrapped around Sara’s shoulders as the fingertips of his right hand gently stroked his son’s arm.

Exhaling softly, Greg walked into the living room and knelt down in front of the couch. After silently bidding Sara and Grissom a hello, he opened his mouth and spoke softly.

“Hey Weave…”

Grissom sat back as Mikey turned his head towards the voice. Gweb!”

The boy sat up on his mother’s lap and extended his arms toward the young man. Greg offered him a small smile as he reached out and pulled him into his arms.

“You okay, buddy?”

“I tinked da bad wadie taked my bubbas.” He glanced over at his parents before looking up at Greg. “Mommy an’ Daddy sayed she din’t. Day wif Cad.”

“Yeah…I know.” Greg stood up carefully and moved to the armchair. He placed Mikey on his thighs facing him. “Why did you think that the bad lady took Alex and Ant?”

Mikey seemed to think about that for a moment before he shrugged his tiny shoulders. “Day gone. Wike me. But I wuz good, Gweb. I not bad agin. Day steel gone dough.”

Greg inhaled deeply and held the boy’s small hands in his own. “Weevil, you weren’t bad. What happened that night…it wasn’t because of anything that you did, okay? You’re a good boy, Weave.”

Oo wuz mad…”

Greg shook his head quickly. “No…I wasn’t mad at you, Mikey.”

“I hid da gwass and peeled da watah.” Mikey’s hazel eyes began to fill with tears once more.

Greg gently wiped a tear away as it spilled down Mikey’s cheek. “Weevil, you were playing…you didn’t mean to knock the water over. It was an accident. I wasn’t mad.”

Yeah?”

“Yeah, an accident.” Greg’s fingers lightly stroked the boy’s face. “I spoke louder than I should have when it happened…but, I promise you…I wasn’t mad at you. That’s not why the bad lady took you from Mommy and Daddy.”

“Den, why?”

Greg cast a quick glance to Sara and Grissom before continuing. “She missed her baby boy…a lot. She thought that you might like to live with her…and call her Mommy.”

“I wike it hear, wif my Mommy an’ Daddy.”

Greg chuckled softly, causing a smile to appear on Mikey’s face. “I know you do, buddy…and that’s why the bad lady isn’t coming to take you away from them again. Or your brothers.”

“She not take Awec an’ And eever?”

“No…she won’t take Alex and Ant either. I promise, Mikey.”

At that moment the doorbell rang, causing Weevil to turn quickly and face his parents. “Cad?”

Grissom pushed himself up and took his son’s hand. “Why don’t we go see who it is?”

“O-tay Daddy!” Mikey scrambled down from Greg’s lap and ran towards the door.

Grissom paused for a moment, placing his hand on Greg’s shoulder. As the young man looked up at him, Grissom smiled lightly. “Thank you.”

Greg tried to swallow the lump in his throat as Grissom followed his son to the door. He caught Sara’s gaze and tried to offer her a smile. “Are you okay?”

Sara nodded slowly as she leaned her head against the cushions. “Yeah…I’m alright. It was just…” She sighed heavily as she lifted her head, her eyes meeting Greg’s again. “I had no idea that Mikey would even associate the buglets not being here with his kidnapping. I’m not sure what we should do about it…”

Greg leaned forward slightly. “You mean…therapy or something?”

“I don’t know. I mean, it’s something that obviously still scares him...which I can completely understand. But…do we send an eighteen-month-old to a therapist?”

“I…really don’t know, Sara. I would ask his pediatrician about it…”

Sara nodded her head absently, deep in thought. Hearing her friend’s voice, she looked up. “I’m sorry…I didn’t hear you…”

Greg offered her a warm, understanding smile. “How’s Grissom?”

“It…it shook him up. I think he’ll be alright.”

Greg reached over, covering her hand with his. “I think we’re all going to be alright, Sara. Especially Weevil. Everything is going to be okay…”

She gave him a thin smile, forcing her tears back down. “I hope you’re right…”

Mikey stood at his father’s side as Grissom pulled the door open. A bright smile appeared on Mikey’s face. “Cad!”

The smile disappeared just as quickly as he narrowed his eyes, which had immediately focused on the baby in her arms. “Wearz And?”

Lindsey suddenly walked through the front door, softly cooing to the young child in her arms. “Hi, Grissom.”

Winsie got And!”

Grissom smiled as his three sons giggled happily at one another. He carefully took Ant from Lindsey’s arms and gave the girl a wink. “Thank you, Lindsey…”

As they made their way into the living room, Catherine tapped Grissom’s arm. “Hey, Griss? How did he know that I had Alex?”

Grissom chuckled softly. “Ask him…”

Grissom knelt down and placed Ant on the cotton blanket that was spread out across the floor. As Catherine settled Alex onto the blanket beside of his twin, she looked at their older brother.

“Hey, Mikey? How did you know that I was carrying Alex?”

Mikey looked up at her, confusion evident in his eyes. He pointed his index finger at Ant. Dat’s And.

“How do you know that he’s Ant?”

The boy’s eyes narrowed again as extended his finger towards Alex. Dat’s Awec.”

Catherine chuckled as she turned her eyes towards a smiling Grissom. “So, he just knows?”

Grissom nodded as he reached over and ruffled his son’s hair. “Sometimes he can tell them apart quicker than Sara and I can…”

Grissom’s smile widened as he watched Mikey empty the bag of toys onto the blanket.
