He smiled at her in adoration as he moved to her side. Her face was
flushed, her hair damp and the bangs plastered to her forehead. He exhaled
deeply as she ran her hand down his sweaty chest. His fingers traced small
circles on her hip as he pulled her closer to him.
No words were spoken. None were needed. They were quite content to rest
in one another’s arms in silence. She stifled a yawn as she snuggled deeper
into his embrace. Placing a soft kiss on her head, he felt her breathing
pattern change as her muscles relaxed, the tension leaving her body.
He intended to stay awake a while longer. Just to relish in this moment,
should it never happen again.

“Sara, what are you doing?”
She turned towards the concerned voice to see Grissom standing in the
doorway, his shoulder resting against the smooth wooden frame. “I’m…just
looking for something…”
He sighed lightly as he entered the lab and sat down on the stool beside
of her. “Sara…”
“Grissom, please don’t start. I’m not chasing rabbits this time. It’s
here…I know it’s here…”
Pulling his glasses off and setting them on the table, he rubbed the
bridge of his nose. “Sara, I’m not going to start…I just…I worry about you.”
“Burn out, get a life, et cetera et cetera…” She mumbled under her breath.
“I said you deserve a life…not get a life…” He mumbled just as low as she
had a second earlier.
She lifted her eyes to his and shook her head softly. “Same difference, Griss…”
Replacing his glasses, he returned her gaze. “No, Sara…it’s not. It’s completely
different.”
She stared at him as he stood and walked towards the door. “Grissom? What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
He stopped and turned, his eyes darting nervously around the room before
settling on Sara. “Just what I said. Deserve a life…get
a life. Two completely different things, Sara.”
Before she had a chance to respond, he slipped out the door and down the
hall. She continued to stare after him for a few seconds.

“Hey…”
He looked up from his stack of paperwork to find Sara standing in his
doorway. In much the same position he had been in about an hour ago. “Hey…”
She shuffled into his office and took a seat in one of the maroon leather
chairs in front of his desk. “You’re right…”
He tilted his head, the confusion showing in his eyes. “About?”
“There is a difference…between ‘deserve’ and ‘get’…”
He dropped his pen lightly on the manila folder sitting in front of him.
She gave him a brief smile before continuing.
“I think my mind may have exchanged ‘deserve’ with ‘get’…” She dropped
her gaze to the corner of his desk and took a deep breath. “I’m sorry if I hurt
you…”
“Sara…”
She stood up quickly and stammered through her next statement as she backed
her way towards the door. “Of course…I…I didn’t obviously…you know…hurt you. I
mean…well…”
He watched her in bewilderment before finding the strength to stand. “You
did.” His voice was soft, almost too low to hear.
Her backpedaling came to a halt and she stared at him. “What?”
“You did…you hurt me.”
“I’m…I’m sorry…I never meant…”
“I wasn’t exactly nice to you, Sara.”
They each stood still, silently communicating with one another. Apologies
offered…then received and accepted.
“I…uh…I guess I should head home…” She turned slowly and took the couple
of steps needed towards the door.
“Sara?”
“Yeah?”
“Did…you find what you were looking for earlier?”
She turned back around and met his eyes. Shaking her head slowly, she
offered him a small smile. “No…”
He glanced at the clock hanging by the door and made his decision.
“Okay…uh…need some help with it?”
Her mouth dropped open slightly as she stared at him.
“I mean…it’s only 7:30…we could work on it for an hour or so. And…then maybe
grab a bite to eat?”
Her mouth closed into a grin as she crossed her arms over her chest.
“Or…maybe we could just go ahead and grab a bite? Leave the case until
tonight?”
He smiled as he pulled his car keys out of his pocket and ushered her out
the door.

He rolled onto his back, pulling her with him until her head was resting
comfortably on his chest. He gently ran his fingers through her hair as the
images began to pour forth.
Laughing in the car.
Breakfast at the diner.
Admissions.
A request for her to join him for coffee at
his place to continue their talk.
Soft music in the background.
The first kiss.
The second kiss.
The subsequent kisses melding into one montage.
He blinked his eyes quickly, then allowed them to close. He continued to
fight sleep as the images came quicker into his mind. Giving him a perfect
timeline as to what, when, and how it happened.
Her request to see his bedroom.
Another kiss.
Clothes falling to the floor.
Bodies landing on the mattress in a tangled heap.
Bodies moving in rhythm with one another.
His heart began to race as he remembered her voice. Calling his name, urging
him to continue…telling him what she liked. Asking him not to stop.
He shifted his body beneath her as he began to feel the beginnings of
arousal.
He refused to fight the yawn that escaped his lips. Instead, he pulled
her closer to his warm body and softly whispered, “I love you” before allowing
sleep to overtake him as well.
A brief smile played at Sara’s sleepy eyes as she gazed up at him. She
watched him fall deeper into sleep before allowing her eyes to close once more.
A soft “I love you too” could be heard in the still room before sleep found her
again.
